Looking Back at 2016 at Solutions
Another year has come and almost gone here in Charlottesville.
We’ve seen the Rio Road/Rt. 29 Intersection completed and watched as new construction began to fill in the empty lots next to Stonefield. We also heralded the opening of 5th Street Station and the long awaited Wegmans.
We’ve had to say goodbye to a few institutions – Spudnuts, long a favorite stop for early morning donuts, is closing its doors Dec. 30, while Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, Better Living Furniture closed earlier this year, along with Downtown favorites the Cat House and the Young Men’s Shop, and on the Corner, Kane Furniture and Interiors.
Traffic around town
With the opening of the Rio/Rt. 29 intersection in September, we’ve seen traffic moving quite quickly through that area with many drivers saying they really like how the flow goes, even though they then get hung up in the traffic lights further up and down the road.
Many drivers are now eyeing the Hydraulic Road/Rt. 29 intersection as the next potential site for revamping.
The 250 Bypass at the John Warner Parkway has seen much more traffic than predicted – the fact that it’s a two-lane road has many drivers frustrated unless you happen to be going against traffic so you can watch the lines grow as you drive past on your way.
Downtown, new projects are popping up every day, it seems. Street work and underground pipes are the focus now of the new West 2nd Project, which will mix residential and retail and offer the farmers market a new home. Although construction on the building itself has yet to start, many people who love the Water Street Parking lot will miss its convenience.
And yet, even as more hotels are proposed and others open their doors along West Main Street, the Landmark still looms its hulking mass over the Downtown Mall. Maybe we’ll see some movement on that project in 2017?
