Longtime residents and visitors alike know that when the weather gets warmer in Charlottesville it’s time for Fridays After Five at the Downtown Pavilion!
A longtime free music tradition – now in its 28th year – it’s traditionally showcased local talent as well as some more nationally known artists that span the music genres from soft rock, country, bluegrass, world beat, jazz and blues to alternative music.
The venue has moved several times – from a small location in front of the Omni Hotel to the original pavilion that offered a large grassy area for families to picnic and a smaller dance floor that was often crowded back in the day.
When the current Pavilion was revamped most, but not all, the grassy spaces were taken away in favor of covering the area to allow for shelter from the frequent afternoon thundershowers that often magically appeared at 5 p.m. on the dot on a Friday afternoon – the current facility allows for uninterrupted shows and the musicians appreciate the protection for their equipment.
Starting around 5:30 p.m. and running until about 8:30 pm, head Downtown for the free concert and a chance to unwind after a long week with friends and family. Bring a picnic or purchase food from any of the food trucks on hand – beverages, from sodas to local beer and wine, are also available for purchase.
Running from April 17-September 11, Fridays After Five, presented by Bud Light, continues to be Charlottesville’s favorite live concert series. Each week volunteers work the concessions on behalf of a variety of local non-profits who share in the proceeds, which raises tens of thousands of dollars to support their work in our community.
The spring and summer schedule features something for everyone!
